2013: The year of new things

by - January 01, 2014

I'm too busy doing nothing over the holidays so I somehow manage to never think of a New Years resolution. This year, however, I had a post-New Years resolution because I was unemployed and had nothing to do after watching back-to-back episodes of Parks & Recreation. This year I promised myself to do things that I've never done. Here's a list of some of the things I tried:

Bikini
So much easier to pee. My god. Why didn't I ditch a one-piece sooner?

Blind date
I've never been on a blind date. Little Miss Matchmaker did well. He was a total babe but from another country so I only borrowed him for a bit. Meeting him sent me on a dating spree in 2013. Mucho fun.
I had more dates this year than I've had in my whole life. Most were fun, some were dull and one was creepy. It's a good way to meet people. So far I haven't met any keepers but very entertaining.

Work folio
I never thought myself a creative. Always felt I was on the client service side of the agency spectrum but when I sat down to make presentations for job interviews last January, I found quite a few fun things from the past and present. It's a shame I won't be using it again for a long while because I landed my dream job!

Party planning
I've always worked with people on events but never got to manage something on my own from the ground up. It was a blast!! I've finally met my match in my current role doing e-commerce, pr, marketing, events and whatever else comes up at Culture Kings. Seriously, having the time of my life!

Dance recital
I've never done a dance class in my life. So I don't know why I chose to learn the most technical of them all. Starting Beginners Adult Ballet in August has been a great way to confirm I have zero coordination and even less balance but it was so fun I said yes to doing the dance recital in December with only about 10 classes between when I started and the concerts because of term break and the few weeks off for wisdom teeth drama. SO much fun, wish I'd done dance as a kid! It'd have been so good for my confidence. And coordination. The pic above is me in my stage make-up. Will try and get a photo of my full costume from the teacher when I see her for another year of dance fun in 2014!

Volunteered for good, not for career
I don't like the unpaid slave labour trend called internships at the moment but without volunteer projects I wouldn't have gotten the breaks in life that led me down a long path of fun and funnerer. This year I finally volunteered for good will and not for career advancement. Little Sissy Pham and I worked at the Brisbane Ekka for the Prince Alexander Hospital Foundation making Strawberry Sundaes. We didn't quite fit in with the housewives and grannies in the stands but still fun.

Potato Chip Tree
I built a potato chip tree. I was rather proud of myself.

2013 has been the best year of my life. Possibly because I can't remember half of 2008 but, seriously, I've had so much fun trying new things for better or worse I didn't even bother to think of a new New Years Resolution. Though, when somebody asks I say, 'The same thing I always resolve to do, Pinky. Try to take over the world!" I can't wait to see what 2014 brings! Gun shooting, skydiving, kayaking, snorkeling... more new things!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
