KEEP IT IN THE PHAMLY

I love a good dress up party so Halloween should be right down my alley but this year I got as far as painting my nails to match the silver and white fairy wings found under my bed. The thing was, I had a roller derby bout to go to.

On the way there it was all tra la la la in the sun and by the time I reached the city post-bout I was soaked to the bone and shivering. File this under things I won't miss about Melbourne. Dressing up as a fairy and throwing glitter at people didn't seem as appealing as sitting in front of the heater with a cup of tea and two cats.
Even though I missed out on a super fun night where my friend fell down the stairs a lot, it wasn't completely a wasted Halloween. I finally got around to trying the new Orly nail varnish I got in a Kathryn Wilson gift bag from her Sydney show in September and W-O-W. Chanel quality ladies. It is luxurious to paint on and dries a stunning shade of shine and available in Oz. Go forth and Orly yourselves! You won't regret it.

In the spirit of Halloween, here's my favourite horror music clip ever. Enjoy!

This was my desk at Diamond Dozen. 'Was' being the operative word. Sadly I had to make like a tree and leave because I recently watched Back To The Future and, also, I am moving back to Brisbane next month to be with Phamly. Two parts yay! One part sigh.

I've had an amazing year with Edwina Hanneysee who runs Diamond Dozen and is one of the most intelligent and amazing people I have ever met. I won't elaborate because writing mushy crap makes me feel like a punce. Though I will say that I am going to miss Ed and the girls - Lucy, Emily, Katie, Maddie, not to mention our crazy neighbours - the gang from Tiny Cafe and Platform 5.
I learned so much about the creative industries - fashion, street art, lifestyle, cultural events, skate, surf (yeah, me! the girl who swims in the slow lane digging action sports!) and had an absolute blast doing it all. I even got to ditch my yellow Miffy-taped MacBook with Adobe CS3 for a while to play with a MacBook Pro and CS5, which made the nerd in me sing! I'm back on my MacBook Woe now, though I have upgraded to CS5 so I don't feel like I'm totally living in the dark ages.

Still, I confess that every time I play Bejeweled Blitz and my four year old MacBook starts to whir like it's about to explode I silently wish it does so I have an excuse to buy me a MacBook Pro. This is an unbelievably dumb wish to make considering I am now officially unemployed and my funds would be better spent on printing copies of my CV and job interview attire.
Thanks for a wonderful year Diamond Dozen. I wish I could stay but someone has to cook Sunday feast for the Phams, send Daddy Pham grocery shopping and boss Little Sissy Pham around like Mum Pham used to do.

Every Sunday I eat delicious food and watch Project Runway America with the funnest gay couple ever. I thought my Sunday nights could not get any better until we invited a pretty fly for a straight guy along. Turns out straight guys have girlfriends who work in fashion retail and bring along their nail varnish collection so us girls can paint our nails when the boys inevitably talk about boring boy stuff - AMAZING!
I got to try the new limited edition Chanel Le Vernis in Peridot 531. This amazing metallic nail varnish looks gold at certain angles and green in others. It is perfect for the indecisive fashionista or the quickly bored. It is also easy to paint on and quick to dry for those with short sitting-still spans. Love, love,  love it. Except for the part where I have to add it onto a long list of things I want to buy once I get a job in Brisbane. Sigh.

UPDATE 05/04/12: Little Sissy Pham bought me this Chanel nail varnish! Best sister ever! I should blog about other things I secretly want her to buy for me... like a house with an indoor pool and a cat door.

This video just makes me happy. It's the same stupid sense of humour I have. Only much better executed.

The great thing about my fondness of synthetic clothing and lack of sewing prowess is when something gets busted I can just tape it together. Exhibit A: My silver Joyrich Metal Rider PU Jacket. The left jacket sleeve and my backpack don't really get along and, as you can see, the jacket sleeve usually loses the battle.
Luckily I once wore cloth tape to a sci-fi costume party - terrible idea! It sticks to skin better than skin sticks to flesh - so I had some handy when my jacket ripped. Cloth tape has held my beloved jacket together for seven months and counting. If you think taping clothes is bad then I won't tell you about Little Sissy Pham's boyfriend who staples his pyjamas together.

Once upon a time in a magical fairy land there lived a girl with a healthy head of thick, silky black hair. It was nice and straight and wonderfully attached to her scalp.
Then one terrible day the girl decided to get her head tattooed and thought she may as well take this opportunity to damage her hair since she would be shaving half of it off. She had it bleached and dyed auburn for the first time in 2009 and so it began...
Once the girl had shaved the left side of her head and gotten the tattoo, her creatively-suppresed hairdresser who spent day after day straightening already straight Asian hair or dying hair varying shades of brown took advantage of the girl's experimental spirit and started creating styles for her professional folio. No one knows if this red clown perm was intentional but this is how the girl's head looked after three sessions in three consecutive weeks.
It was fun for a while but then the girl started getting bored of people staring at her and missed chatting to her regular Vietnamese grocer who had stopped talking to her the moment she turned into a tattooed, shaved punk. She went back to black and grew out the shaved side of her head. The plan didn't work, her Viet grocer remained silent.
The girl quickly realised that while she had been a flaming red clown, she had filled her wardrobe with very tame black, greys and whites to avoid looking like a colourful circus freak. She didn't have the time to change the colour palette of her entire wardrobe so she changed her hair back to not black.
All was happy in hair land until the next time the girl went back to her hairdresser to go an even lighter shade. This is when her hair got together and mutinied against the girl who had tortured them with evil amounts of chemicals. There was no arguing with her hair, they didn't even wait to be cut off her head they simply up and left her while the hairdresser fingers through the girl's hair. The loyal hairs that stayed behind tried their best but all they could do was form this strange orange bob "cut".
When the girl finally decided to go back to black and stay that way, Mum Pham was so happy that she yelled out to Dad Pham while she was on the phone to tell him that their baby doll was back! Her poor mother had had bad anxiety every time the girl came up to visit. The anticipation she felt waiting for the girl to pop out of the car with yet another hairstyle was almost more than she could bear.
The girl had funny angles and shapes in her black hair for what seemed like the longest time while she waited for the shaved side of her head to catch up with her unshaved side. It has been 20 months since she last set foot in a hair salon and her beloved hairdresser has since sold her salon and gone on a well deserved holiday. It is a good thing the hairdresser has gone. The girl had intended to perm her long hair for Xmas 2011 and we all know how that story wouldn't have a happy ending.

The first time I slipped on a pair of Kathryn Wilson's Julia Heel to see if I wanted to order a pair for myself, our work neighbour burst into the office to make his daily cameo. I asked him his opinion because he's gay (....and he owns a creative studio that works with fashion but that's not as offensive or funny a reason).

He took one look at me and said, 'Honey, those are hot. H-O-T. HOT. Just look at you! It's changed your whole body language!' Sure enough my hand was on my hip and while I couldn't walk in the Julia because they were one size too big, I wouldn't walk in them anyway. These shoes are made for strutting! Oh Kathryn Wilson, you've done it again.
NB: I wouldn't style these shoes the way I have in this pic - disco bottoms plus sporty casual top. I was just super-excited when I got my new Julias and had to slip them on in place of my space boots!
