The Juddy Roller café

by - July 11, 2011

There’s a new café in town called the Juddy Roller and it opened its doors for the first time last week! Situated in Fitzroy, Melbourne behind my old warehouse haunt and Moor Wood Furniture, the cafe is run by my beloved friend Shaun Hossack. He and I have known each other long enough that I am comfortable and probably too quick in shutting down his stupid ideas, of which there are many. When he told me he was going to start a café where the coffee and friendly service would be superior, my first reaction was, ‘But you don’t even drink tea!’
As years passed, Shaun developed a sincere coffee addiction, talking at light speeds and never sitting still. It was quite amusing to watch and rather annoying to converse with because his brain would tell a story so fast his lips would skip every other sentence to keep up. The ability to make sense was one of Shaun's many sacrifices on his long journey to learning how to make the best coffee. He also learned DIY construction to build the warm and welcoming cafe with his own hands (and the helpful hands of his supportive friends - the ones who didn't question his caffeine intake levels).

I enjoyed my first Juddy Roller takeaway flat white with one sugar last week - it was nice and hot and flavoursome! I’m not a regular coffee drinker so can't tell you if it's the best coffee in town - you’ll have to be the judge of that. Shaun has since learned how to drink copious amounts of caffeine and still hold up his end of the conversation so don't be scared to drop in and say hi.

I'll tell you more about the evolving menu as I start trying out the dishes. My favourite aspect of the café is it supports street art. The feature wall in the Juddy Roller  will change regularly as Shaun comes across local and international artists he finds inspiring. The current artwork was painted by Sydney artist Ears who flew down especially to paint the wall.

Chapel Street (off Johnston Street in Fitzroy between Smith and Brunswick Streets) where the cafe entrance sits, features some amazing artwork along the warehouse and restaurant walls. Something Shaun and his crew of merry men have been pushing in the lead up to the 2011 Illogic street art event in August.

If you do head to the Juddy Roller, please tell Shaun, “Jade Pham says don’t be a drag, Shaun, just be a queen.” He’ll hate that.
